Due to its unique topography and stunning geographic location, Cape Town boasts some extraordinary feats of architecture and design, and many of these are situated along its Atlantic Seaboard. From glass houses held aloft by dizzyingly tall stilts to rotating driveways and infinity pools that appear to flow directly into the Atlantic Ocean, there are houses along this strip that are jaw-dropping in their modern magnificence. With the city’s natural beauty, designing structures that blend into their sandstone backdrop while maximising the city’s sea- and mountain views is a task local architects have embraced with skill, and the indoor-outdoor spaces our next-to perfect climate allows creates some beautifully fluid living spaces.
While Capetonians are very familiar with the ‘Cape Doctor,’ a south-easterly wind renowned for blowing all the ‘germs’ out of the city bowl, we are still taken aback by its veracity when it comes calling. Last week, our ‘dry storm’ blew for four days on end, wrecking roofs and flattening trees. Usually the ‘table cloth’ (the clouds that gather on Table Mountain when the south-easter blows) dissipates after 48 hours, but this time it had stamina. This is one of the reasons homes in Green Point, Sea Point, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay are popular choices as they are naturally protected from the worst of the gusts. This wind is a nuisance when you have outdoor plans, but there are always a few relatively wind-free spots you can find to position your beach towel. And then there’s the stunning after-effect of a few days of blowing as the wind-driven upwelling results in seas of a bright, unbelievable turquoise. After a spell of wind, Camps Bay could be the Caribbean.
Cape winters are wet and at times gorgeously stormy, making walks along the beach and Sea Point’s Promenade dramatic and wonderful, but even the mid-winter months are punctuated by sunny, blue-sky days. Without a breath of wind, some argue that our early winter months are actually the best time of year. While temperatures don’t climb very high, these beautiful, wind-free days lend themselves to lounging on decks, dozing on day-beds and enjoying al fresco lunches while the sun – in contrast to summer – is mild and gentle. Winter is also a good time to visit one of the many luxury hotels situated along the coastline. Sitting beside a roaring fire with a glass of red wine while a stormy sea crashes outside your window is a delight not to be missed. Another advantage to the indoor-outdoor spaces we excel at here in South Africa is that they present wonderful opportunities for entertaining. Whether you’re a dab hand in the kitchen or prefer the ease of hiring caterers, a generous deck with a fire pit and a dramatic ocean sunset are perfect ingredients for memorable and successful dinners and parties.
When you fly into Cape Town, what you’re struck by is how many little aquamarine rectangles dot the landscape. We are very privileged here to own our own swimming-pools, and particularly on the seaboard, these are frequently built a short distance from our living spaces. A glass sliding door and a few short steps, and you are out of your bedroom and in the welcome cool of the water. Given the heat and intensity of our long summers, private pools are practically de rigueur. In the searing months of February and March, half an hour spent relaxing in the pool before bedtime means your core body temperature is beautifully cool before you slip between crisp, cotton sheets. Plunge pools are extremely easy to maintain and are really all you need to do the trick. So, come on in. As you’ll see, the water is just fine.
