‘This is just like Monaco!’ exclaims my guest from Denmark as we drive along Victoria Road past another Lamborghini parked casually on the shoulder of the road. To our right, yachts anchored off Clifton 4th sparkle brightly against the deep blue sea and all you see for miles around is another endless summer. For Capetonians who do this commute daily, well… it’s easy to forget how spectacular our city’s setting actually is. Nestled in its pretty little bowl between the mountain and the ocean, Cape Town is a gem to be treasured by its residents.
And actually, it’s better than Monaco in many ways. While its luxury apartments and houses with their 360 degree views of the bay and magnificent Table Mountain don’t necessarily come cheap, you don’t have to be a Grimaldi here to live like royalty. Urgently need a poke bowl but can’t be bothered to leave the house? For the ridiculously low sum of R10, a friendly guy on a moped will bring one to your door. Or sashimi. Or a rack of ribs. Or a bottle of champagne, or pretty much anything else your heart desires. Massages, pedicures, manicures, spa treatments – all of these things cost a fraction of what they do in other parts of the world, which means that you can spoil yourself as often as you like.
If you’re a foodie you will know that in the past 20 years Cape Town has transformed itself into something of a culinary Mecca. Not only can you find any food type on the planet, but what you get is of an exceptionally high standard. This is partly due to the high quality meat, seafood and fresh produce we grow here in South Africa, and partly due to the fact that we’re excellent at picking up on global trends and replicating them locally. We are so spoilt in this regard that it’s not uncommon to be a little disappointed when visiting other parts of the world renowned for their cuisine. And then there’s the cost thing again. What you pay for a plate of food and a bottle of wine in one of the most stunning settings on the planet is a fraction of what you would in Europe or the US. We are lucky folk indeed.
While visitors are often surprised by the size of the city which has grown exponentially and stretches itself out in many directions, the Atlantic Seaboard is unarguably the place tourists flock to and where locals want to be. This is not just for the views, but for the proximity to the city centre as well as the most scenic coastline, the best eateries and the most breathtaking restaurants and rooftop bars. Many of its houses and apartment blocks are located a short walk from Cape Town’s most popular beaches, so you can leave your sports car parked where it is and take a short walk or moped ride to the bright, white beaches and fresh, crystal- clear waters of Camps Bay, Clifton, Bakoven, Beta or Bali beaches.
For maximum comfort while you work on your tan or catch up on some reading, hire a reclining chair and an umbrella. It’s been scientifically proven that time on the beach calms your mind, helps you focus and increases endorphin levels, so the longer you hang out there, the better. Then, when you’re done, head somewhere that has a sunset view, order your favourite cocktail, kick off your shoes and drink a toast to life, love and happiness.
