Sexy Sundowner Spots

Things are certainly looking up for us. Despite our fears and some scary predictions, we rode out the Covid-19 storm with extraordinary success, and a recovery rate so high it has medical professionals puzzled. As we enjoy the transition to Level One and look forward to international borders opening up on 1 October, spring has arrived in all her flowery glory, and these warm and gentle days are heralding the start of a new and better time. Having had so many things we love taken away from us, we will be taking less for granted now; particularly when it comes to enjoying the best parts of our city. As the days get warmer and restrictions lessen, it’s time to head out again to our favourite spots. Here are five fun places to order a bottle of cold Cape bubbly and celebrate the end of a tough six months.

The Athletic Club and Social

This lovely Victorian house from the early 1900s was once an underground speakeasy-style bar for athletes, and its leather sofas, vintage wallpaper and amber lighting make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. The decor is simply beautiful. The building was once owned by a pharmacist and sports fanatic called Herbert Tothill who turned the basement into a gathering place for sports stars of all races to meet and socialise without being arrested for violating the terms of the Group Areas Act. Trophies, vintage sports equipment and framed newspaper cutouts adorn the walls, along with pictures of Cape Town’s oldest sports teams. Cleverly arranged furniture and rich, velvet drapes create intimate corners, perfect for romantic dinners or after work drinks. The generous balcony on the second floor looks out over Signal Hill, and it’s a great spot for late afternoon/early evening gatherings. Share a selection of starters from the Greek-inspired menu, or try the melt-in-your-mouth, rotisserie-roasted lamb shoulder currently on special. If you go on a Thursday night you’ll be treated to live jazz.

Grand Africa Cafe and Beach

A restaurant with its own private beach? Don’t mind if we do. This indoor/outdoor space couldn’t be better geared towards hot, summer afternoons which melt into sultry, star-studded nights. This sexy venue attracts the city’s beautiful people who come to mingle, be seen and enjoy its stunning location. Cocktails, cool tunes and oversized sunglasses are the order of the day. Order a Champagne Mojito (bubbles, rum, fresh lime and mint) or a Porn Star Martini (Passoa, vanilla syrup, passion fruit puree, lime and sparkling wine) and feel your hips start to sway. If you get peckish, try the tempura prawns, fresh mussels in coconut broth or order a pizza to share.

Chinchilla

Camps Bay is well known for its magnificent sunsets. Trendy rooftop cafe and bar, Chinchilla, in its prize position on the strip, is a fabulous place to tumble into after a day on the beach, or to warm up before you hit the town. From late afternoon onwards live DJ sets will get you grooving, while world class mixologists conjure up a heavenly assortment of cocktails. An elegant menu keeps the munchies at bay.

Sky Bar at the Grey Hotel

Situated atop a trendy boutique hotel in De Waterkant, this vibey, contemporary African rooftop bar offers magnificent views of the city and Table Mountain. There is a rooftop swimming pool for those sweltering summer days, and you’d hard-pressed to find a more gorgeous place to enjoy a dip and a cold drink. When the sun goes down, the twinkling lights of the city create a gorgeous and very romantic backdrop for pre-or post-dinner drinks. Lounge by the pool by day, order a bite to eat and enjoy some laidback tunes.

Harrington’s Cocktail Lounge

You can’t see the sunset, but you won’t care. This classic cocktail lounge and vibey restaurant is stylish and sophisticated, giving off an air of opulence and old world charm. Wooden accents, velvet booths and a boutique DJ box will turn your ‘one drink after work’ into an evening of fun and revelry. Go hungry, the food is great. And wear shoes you can dance in — even if that wasn’t the plan.
