Lockdown 101 – Survival Kit

We are half-way through our 21-day lockdown, and while life still feels pretty strange, it’s amazing how staying home has become our new normal. The shock, panic and disbelief which accompanied those early days has been replaced with a calm acceptance and a newfound sense of humility as we watch the world join hands to combat this global crisis. Our government’s response to the Covid 19 threat has been quick and effective, and the strictest measures have been put in place to protect the South African nation. For this great leadership we are immensely grateful. We have also washed everything there is to wash in our homes, and we are bored senseless. Happily, there walk among us innovative souls who have tapped into their creative genius to find ways of connecting and lifting humanity during this time of isolation (someone remind me how we survived without the internet). Here are a few.

JEFF Together

I don’t know who this guy in the orange vest is, but he’s saved our lives. For those of us who rely on regular exercise to keep the psychiatric meds at bay, the prospect of not leaving our homes is a special kind of scary. Enter JEFF Together (Johno’s eFitness Faculty). Every day at 8am and 3pm this special soul, his gorgeous wife and their adorable young daughters show up on Facebook (sometimes wearing tutus) to lead the country through a fun, Vitality-driven 30-minute workout which doesn’t require anything but a little bit of space, a couple of food tins (for extra weight) and the occasional chair. His good humour, energy and enthusiasm are infectious and, actually, you don’t need kilometers of promenade and an enormous gym to stay active. Secretly, I suspect we will leave this lockdown having a slightly different attitude towards working out. But for now, he’s the reason our lycra leggings aren’t gathering dust and we still have a smattering of endorphins to get us through the day. Thank you, Johno Meintjies. You’re the business.

Ohm Shanti

If squats holding onto a tin of baked beans isn’t your thing (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it) and what you’re needing most is to calm your overactive mind, yoga and meditation are fool-proof ways to lower your heart rate and chill the hell out if the anxiety of it all is getting to you. Yoga is even easier to do at home as all you need is enough space for your mat. If you’re a member of Virgin Active, there are a range of different classes available online from calming, breathing exercises to ‘Flow’ classes which are more dynamic and athletic. If you aren’t, there are endless classes you can do for free on Youtube and loads of online options to choose from. Yoga Studio: Mind & Body charges a small fee for a large number of stretch, breathing and yoga class options. You can choose between 15, 30 or 60 minutes, and there are options for all levels from beginners to advanced. You can focus on mobility, immunity, sleep, mental health, back pain and weight management. It’s a worthwhile investment.

Cooking Made Easy

To help us prepare nutritious and delicious meals out of the sad contents of our lockdown cupboards, our favourite TV chef, Justine Drake, has taken it upon herself to post daily recipes which are so simple, even the most challenged among us can pull them off. To keep the Rickets at bay, this kind soul is inviting us into her own, private kitchen and teaching us how to transform a few household items into tasty dinners. Filmed by her husband with dogs and kids in the background, she makes things like tins of tuna and frozen peas look sexy, and that takes some serious skill. Find her on Youtube at Just Cook at Home SA. There are, after all, limits to the amount of cheese and biscuits one can consume.

But Wait, There’s More

Worked out, eaten and finished Netflix? Never in the history of the online world have there have been more interesting things to do with your laptop. Never made it to Disneyland? Have no fear. Some of the world’s most popular theme parks (Disneyland, Disney World and Epcot) are using Google Street View to bring you 360-degree tours. And if you want to go on a ride, you can find video footage of the biggest, scariest rollercoasters in the world. While their doors are closed, many museums and theaters (London’s British Museum and Carnegie Hall in New York, for example) are inviting you to visit them online, offering digital tours via Google Arts and Culture. The Metropolitan Opera is offering live daily opera streams while many colleges, including Harvard and Yale, are offering online courses in a wide range of subjects. Always wanted to learn a language? The Duolingo app is brilliant. For space cadets, NASA’s mobile app allows you to take a virtual tour of its premises. Guitar classes, drawing classes and online bingo games are all a click away. As are your friends. When it all gets too much, add your besties on houseparty.com and arrange virtual sundowners. It’s not the same, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing.
