1. Walk Through the Green Point Park
Green Point’s Urban Park is a new addition to the area, and a triumph of planning and design. Its lush, generous lawns are a wonderful gathering place for families, and all weekend long it plays host to festive birthday celebrations, fun cricket matches and elaborate picnics. People arrive early to stake out their spot, and the park has rapidly become a favourite and much-used venue. Like the nearby promenade, the Green Point Urban Park is the kind of public space where you find all of South Africa, and the vibe is friendly, relaxed and inclusive. Its biodiversity garden has a wide selection of traditional medicinal herbs, and you can learn what plants indigenous South Africans used to cure ailments. As a result of fresh, clean streams that flow directly from Table Mountain towards the sea it has a scenic wetlands area filled with bright water lilies and a diversity of creatures. It also has two fabulous play parks catering to kids of different ages, a fitness area, animal sculptures and a Khoi display. This happy green space beside the stadium is definitely worth a visit. 2. Soak up the Sun on Camps Bay Beach
This vibey strip is like a mini Miami, complete with palm trees and pavement restaurants. It’s one of the best of Cape Town’s beaches because it’s just across the road from the cafe strip, so when you get hot and thirsty and sea is just too dang cold (though we do recommend a quick dip) you can throw on a pair of shorts and wander over for a refreshing cocktail. What’s cool about this beach is that you can hire umbrellas and reclining chairs and, with a soft breeze in your hair, snooze the day away to the sound of pounding waves.
3. Visit the Zeitz Mocaa
So, you wouldn’t know a William Kentridge if it fell on your head? No mind. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa will blow your socks off anyway. It’s the largest art museum in Africa, and the biggest showcase of African art in the world, stretching over 6000 square meters, nine floors and 100 gallery spaces. But the art is only part of the amazingness. It’s housed in an old grain silo built in 1921, and the interior is carved out in the shape of a grain of corn. The unusual windows, the light and the unique structure of the building combine to create an astonishing space. The artworks tell evocative stories of the history of the continent, and even if art is not your thing, it’s impossible to leave unmoved. Its restaurant and rooftop sculpture garden both have stunning views of the mountain. Take in as much as you can manage and then head upstairs to the bar, order a drink and contemplate the many textures of this fascinating city.
4. Explore De Waterkant
When shopping is on the agenda most people head to the V&A Waterfront, but De Waterkant has some unique and lovely little shops dotted along its cobbled streets. This area of Cape Town has become seriously fashionable, and has some great restaurants, coffee shops and roof-top bars. It also has a vibrant night-life, so if you’re in the mood for a party this is where you want to head.
